READING
We will engage in whole group learning to begin our reading block each day. During this time, new skills and strategies will be introduced, practiced, and reviewed through a variety of activities. The students will be working in small group rotations for the second half of the reading block. During this time, they will be working on a range of skills that include their listening/fluency, independent reading goals, nonfiction (science/social studies), drama, writing, and guided reading with the teacher.
MATH
In fifth grade math, the students will work in the five major strands of mathematics. These include: Number and Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Data Analysis, and Algebra.

Students will complete a writing portfolio that will follow them to middle school this year. The portfolio will consist of one sample of each of the following types of writing: Expressive, Literature Response, Book Review, Informational Report, and Persuasive Letter.
