We will engage in whole group learning to begin our reading block each day.  During this time, new skills and strategies will be introduced, practiced, and reviewed through a variety of activities.  The students will be working in small group rotations for the second half of the reading block.  During this time, they will be working on a range of skills that include their listening/fluency, independent reading goals, nonfiction (science/social studies), drama, writing, and guided reading with the teacher
MATH
In fifth grade math, the students will work in the five major strands of mathematics.  These include:  Number and Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Data Analysis, and Algebra.           

WRITING
Students will complete a writing portfolio that will follow them to middle school this year.  The portfolio will consist of one sample of each of the following types of writing:  Expressive, Literature Response, Book Review, Informational Report, and Persuasive Letter.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES

Fifth grade science focuses on Weather, Force and Motion, Interdependence of Plants and Animals, and Landforms.  Social studies focuses primarily on the United States and its neighboring countries. 
Science and social studies will be integrated in the reading block, as well as taught independently.
