Mrs. Mary Rizzo
Technology Assistant, Videographer, & Webmaster

girl at computerMy experience (and subsequent love for) working with computers and students began when I was a volunteer at Winter Park Elementary School in 1992. One of my first "assignments" was to help students in my daughter's first grade class write stories using a story writing program on the one computer in the classroom. The following two years my technology skills expanded as I learned to use the computer to make lots of teacher resources such as newsletters, worksheets, and certificates. I was then fortunate to work as an assistant teacher in a second grade classroom for my last two years at Winter Park. I continued to learn more about computers and software as I was privileged to work with a wonderful teacher who encouraged me to grow in many ways -including my technology skills. When we moved to Holly Tree Elementary when it opened, I continued to work in a second grade class for the following two years, but was also the Technology Facilitator in my "free time". In 1997, New Hanover County Schools funded the Technology Facilitator as a full-time position. I left the classroom and moved to the Computer Lab. Although I miss having a close relationship with second graders, I now enjoy being able to provide quality technology assistance to the whole school. I remained at Holly Tree until June 2003 after which I transferred to Parsley Elementary.

Since being a full time Facilitator, I have taught hundreds of hours of staff development to staff at my schools and for New Hanover County. I was an R&R (Revisit & Revitalize) Trainer for four years, having co-authored R&R Third Edition. I have also presented at several state technology conferences.

My duties as a Technology Assistant (NHCS changed the job title to Technology Assistant in 2008) keep me very busy! In June 2006, we transitioned to an all PC (Windows) school. I am responsible for maintaining the computers (over 170), server & network, and other technology related equipment at Parsley. More importantly, I facilitate the integration of technology skills by providing training and support to staff members in the use of hardware and software as it pertains to the NC Computer/Technology Standard Course of Study. As part of the "Parsley Today" Production Team, I am the school's videographer. I am also Parsley's webmaster - a "chore" I really enjoy.

If ever I can be of assistance to you, please let me know. Come to my office (next to the Computer Lab) or e-mail me at mary.rizzo(at)nhcs.net
