5th Grade: 3rd 9 Weeks

Reading
Students will participate in a 90 minute reading block.  The beginning of this block is spent doing whole group minilessons:  read aloud, literature responses, spelling and vocabulary activities, etc.  During the second half of reading block, students are in "stations."  These rotations may include:  Guided Reading with Mrs. Somech, Reading Wheel Station, Listening Station, Non-Fiction Station, Computer Station, Poetry Station, Writing Station, and many others.   

Written Expression
Students will work on writing portfolios, which will be sent to their middle school next year.  We will continue to work on persuasive writing and will begin our "Bio-cube" project. 

Math
In math class, we will finish our unit on fractions.  We will follow fractions with our algebra unit.

Science
We will begin investigating ecosystems with the help of our science kits.

Social Studies
We will study about the 13 original colonies & present day United States.

Spelling
Students will continue to learn the definitions of words that are included in the stories we read together in class.  They are also required to learn how to spell the words from our "Words Their Way" program.  Students will be given individualized weekly spelling lists that they will keep in their spelling notebooks.  These notebooks should be going home every night so that students can be prepared for their spelling tests, which will be given on Fridays.
