Scoring Sheet for Narrative Writing
Prompt: The prompt tells your child what s/he is to write about. The prompt is the "what" in "who, what, where and when".

1. The writing has multiple paragraphs with a minimum of 12 logically sequenced, complete and coherent sentences on a single topic. (The topic must be clearly connected to the prompt.)

2. Most words are correctly spelled. Inventive spelling can generally be read by others.

3. Common capitalization and end punctuation are properly used. (2 possible points) |

4. The opening paragraph creates interest and has a topic sentence that addresses the prompt, identifying the characters and setting.

5. Detail is used to provide more information related to the topic. (Tell us more! Relate action, feelings, thoughts, descriptions, more action... Hold your helicopter over one event, avoid jet rides over a series of events)

6. Descriptive words and phrases are used to help the reader visualize the events, person, object or place being described. Show us what is happening.

7. The closing sentences express thoughts, opinions, reactions, feelings, etc. about the event. They should indicate an end to the narrative.

8. There are varied and appropriate transition words and phrases which show the passage of time or a sequence of events. ("Next, then, first" are too simplistic)
