Literacy Stations

In our classroom, we use literacy stations as a means for delivering reading instruction to
students, exposing them to a variety of genres, teaching an appreciation of literature, and
maintaining key reading concepts. The literacy stations are modeled after the research of Debbie
Diller and Stephanie Harvey.
* These stations are based on the 5 Big Ideas in Reading (National Reading Panel)
* Students are engaged in the activities at the stations (no more than 3 students are at a
station at a given time)
* Instruction can be designed to reach ALL levels of learners
* Students are exposed to a wide variety of genres weekly (eg: fables, legends, poetry,
all types of nonfiction)
* Each student rotates through a guided reading group daily (led by the teacher- material
tailored to reading levels)
