AVID Elective

 

AVID Course Description:

AVID is designed to increase student success, enabling all students to complete a college preparatory path.  The goal of AVID is to have all students enrolled in a four-year college or university with a feeling of being prepared for the higher levels of education.

 

AVID Course Objectives:

  • The students will succeed in rigorous curriculum.
  • The students will enter mainstream activities of the school.
  • The students will become more organized and prepared for high levels of education.
  • The students will enroll in a four-year college or university after high school.

 

Student Responsibilities:

  • The student will take Cornell Notes in all core classes and will keep learning logs in all non-core classes.
  • The student will keep an organized notebook.
  • The student will complete all assigned work and turn it in on time.
  • The student will participate actively in class discussions and activities.
  • The student will respect all students, tutors, guest speaker, and teachers.
  • The student will put forth 100% effort on all work.

Homework Policy:

  • All homework is to be turned in on time.  No late work will be accepted! 
  • Homework must be done BEFORE class begins.
  • Make-up work must be completed within an appropriate time period (two class days per every day missed).  You miss Monday-come back Tuesday-work is due Thursday when you walk into class. 

 

Classroom Rules:

·        RESPECT-for yourself, for your classmates, for property, for the teacher, and for any visitors in this classroom.  If followed, this rule takes care of 99.9% of problems that could interfere with instruction.

·        Focus on LEARNING.  No off-task behavior.

·        Arrive to class on time and prepared to learn.

·        Participate actively in class discussions and activities-sleeping, resting, etc is not permitted.

·        All other school rules apply.

o       NO cell phones, I-pods, dress code, etc.

 

1st infraction-Teacher/student conference

2nd infraction-Parent phone call

3rd infraction-Detention

4th infraction-Referral to the Dean of Students

 

Unexcused Tardiness:

The student is allowed five minutes to get to class.  If the student is tardy and it is unexcused the following consequences will apply.

·        First tardy- Warning

·        Second tardy- Teacher phone call home.

·        Third tardy- Teacher phone call home and a 30 minute, after school detention.

·        Fourth tardy- Referral to the Dean.

 

Bathroom Passes: Each student has three passes for each quarter.  Try to go on the way to class if possible-do not ask for a pass on your way in the door or the first five minutes of class.

Snacks: Food is NOT permitted in the school building.  You may have a drink in class with you as long as it has a cap and you are not sharing with classmates. 

 

Materials Needed:

Please have all the material for this class by Monday, August 31, 2009.  If for some reason the student cannot get the materials needed, please inform Mrs. Hall ASAP.

  • Blue/Black Pens
  • Pencils
  • Highlighter
  • White Lined Paper (College Ruled-plenty for all classes)
  • Index cards
